Tracking global trends in manufacturing UNIDO, a UN agency, supports sustainable and inclusive industrial development, where industry drives low-emission economies, improves living standards, and preserves the natural world. UNIDO asked us to develop a new analytics platform bringing together a rich pool of data for field experts and policymakers around the world. Using data from 7 sources spanning 172 countries and 22 industries, our goal was to speed up policymaking by reducing the need for analyst intervention. We ran workshops in London and Vienna to initiate a user experience proposition through user research and data prototyping. Inspired by the mid-century design of the Vienna International Conference Centre, the site’s identity and colour scheme echo UNIDO’s headquarters. We need to develop data literacy, innovative tools and visualisation platforms, allowing users to intuitively understand data and interact with it in real-time. Amina J. Mohammed UN Deputy Secretary-General The SDG-9 data visualisation tracks progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through 5 industry performance indicators. The platform includes hundreds of in-depth research articles, featuring additional charts published using Applied Charts. Being able to author our own interactive data visualisations through Applied Charts is a real game-changer for us. Adnan Serič Research Manager for the Department of Policy, Research and Statistics, UNIDO Since 2019, UNIDO has published articles and data visualisations, aiding evidence-based decisions and boosting site traffic by 400%.
